International round-up: Pukki nets late penalty for Finland

28 March 2021

Teemu Pukki netted a late penalty to continue his fine goalscoring form and help Finland rescue a point in their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Sunday.

Ukraine looked set for all three points against the Finns when substitute Junior Moraes scored on 80 minutes but Pukki capitalised on a poor challenge from Vitali Mykolenko to fire the ball home from the spot for his third goal in two qualifiers.

It's now 14 goals in Pukki's last 12 matches for club and country - next up for the Huuhkajat is a friendly against Switzerland on Wednesday night.

Earlier in the afternoon, Dimitris Giannoulis returned from his absence from Greece's previous match to play the final third of their 2-1 friendly win over Honduras.

The City left-back was withdrawn with concussion in the Canaries' draw with Blackburn Rovers before the break but after sitting out Greece's draw against Spain on Thursday, he returned to feature in Thessaloniki.

Elsewhere in 2022 World Cup qualification, Przemyslaw Placheta played the final half an hour of Poland's 3-0 win over Andorra.

Placheta will hope for more inclusion on Wednesday night when the Poles travel to Wembley to face England in their final qualifier of the break.

Grant Hanley started once again for Scotland in Israel, following his goalscoring heroics on Thursday against Austria, and he helped them battle to a point in Tel Aviv.

Dor Peretz gave Israel the lead by Newcastle United's Ryan Fraser equalised late on to salvage a point for the Scots.

Kenny McLean came on as a late substitute for Steve Clarke's men.

To round off the action in Europe, Oliver Skipp played 90 minutes of England Under-21s 2-0 defeat to Portugal in the Under-21 European Championship. Max Aarons and Todd Cantwell were unused substitutes in their second game of the tournament.

Later on Sunday evening, Sebastian Soto and Onel Hernandez are both in action across the Atlantic. Soto will aim to help USA Under-23s qualify for the final of qualification for the Tokyo Olympics when they play Honduras Under-23s in Mexico at 11pm (UK time).

And Hernandez will hope to help Cuba bounce back from defeat in their previous qualifier against Guatemala when they face Curacao at 10pm (UK time).
