Norwich City Under-23s were beaten 1-0 at home to Newcastle United Under-23s on Friday thanks to a 90th minute winner from the away side.
Tom Allan had a decent chance to give Newcastle the lead early on, latching onto a loose ball given away by Norwich in their own half. Joe Rose made a good save at his near post to deny Allan, however.
City almost got themselves in front moments later, Matthew Dennis going around the 'keeper before seeing his shot headed off the line. The re-bound fell to Josh Martin and his shot was blocked.
Stan Flaherty had a shot saved by Rose before Melvin Sitti, who was occupying the right wing in the 13th minute, was picked out by Martin and sent a deep cross into the box for Josh Giurgi to run onto, his header straight at Jake Turner.
Florent Indalecio curled high and wide from distance after Newcastle chained a good passing move together in the 20th minute.
Andrew Omobamidele showed great vision and range of passing to play a perfectly weighted ball over the top for Dennis to run onto. The latter took on the volley first time and Turner pushed it around the post.
On the brink of half-time, Martin played the ball through to Dennis who, with a handful of Newcastle bodies around him, shot over the bar.
Oscar Thorn replaced Giurgi at half-time and became heavily involved in the action going forward throughout the second half.
His first effort was comfortably saved by Turner, his second going wide of the near post and his third hitting the side netting.
He then retreated to a deeper position to put in an excellent ball following a cleared Norwich corner, but Jonathan Tomkinson could only head over the bar.
At the other end, Rose was forced to make a spectacular save to deny Flaherty an impressive free-kick. The Newcastle attacker sent the dead ball towards the far post and it evaded everyone, Rose reacting quickly to stretch to his right and keep the scores level.
The away side had a few good chances in the second half, in fact, Jack Young putting a tempting ball across the face of goal without anyone on the end of it. Another good cross came in from the left later on but Rose did well to get something on it.
Dennis fired wide on the volley in the 81st minute as both sides continued to play the game with a high tempo, before Martin sent a free kick over the bar.
Owen Bailey, on as a substitute, secured three points for the away side when he got on the end of a goalmouth scramble from a Newcastle corner in the 90th minute.
