After finishing one spot above the drop in the 2018-19 Championship season, Millwall came back with a vengeance in the campaign gone by, finishing eighth.

The Lions will be more than pleased with the job Gary Rowett has done in such a challenging season, after he replaced Neil Harris just ten games into the start of the 2019-20 campaign, going on to produce at least a point in nearly every game.

After such a positive season, the only complaint Millwall will be having is wishing they got Rowett in earlier, as they finished just two points off an all-important play-off position. The Lions new signing Matt Smith gelled in the team immediately, finishing as their top scorer with 14 goals.

Nottingham Forest

Manager: Sabri Lamouchi

Top scorer last season:
Lewis Grabban (20)

What was a great season with an increasingly likely play-off spot to finish soon took an unfortunate downturn for Forest, when they lost out on sixth place through goal difference to Swansea.

Some Forest fans may see the break in the season as the cause of such bad luck, since they went on to win just two games of the eight in the restart, with losses such as a last-minute goal from Barnsley sealing Nottingham Forest's fate outside the top six.

Former Canary Lewis Grabban had a great individual season, netting Forest 20 goals in his 45 appearances for the side, his most goals in a single season since leaving Norfolk back in 2016.

Preston North End

Manager: Alex Neil
Position last season:
Top scorer last season:
Daniel Johnson (12)

For the first half of the 2019-20 season, Preston looked like the biggest surprise team in the Championship, sitting in play-off positions for several weeks and even enjoying a little bit of time in second-place.

Play-offs just wasn’t meant to be this season for ex-Canaries manager Alex Neil and his side however, as they slipped ever so slightly down the table to ninth by the end of the campaign, four points from sixth.

Looking to replicate the season they’ve had as a minimum, the Lilywhites can take the next campaign in any direction, with potential to be a surprise to many once more.
