Salop face Rotherham in the final after beating Charlton Athletic 1-0 in both legs of their semi-final, and Godfrey, 20, is keen to end the season on a high.

“This is why I play football, to be involved in games like this,” Godfrey, who was man of the match in the second leg of the semi-final, told canaries.co.uk. “There’s a lot riding on it, and I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we get the result we deserve.

“We’ll go there and see what we can do, and everyone deserves it for the hard work we’ve all put in this season.”

Godfrey has made 50 appearances in all competitions for Shrewsbury this season, and has received glowing reports in a holding midfield role.

“You go out and try and get games as a young lad and I’ve been really fortunate to do it with a fantastic set of lads and with some unbelievable staff,” he said. “The knowledge of the game they’ve shared with me has been top-class and I’m really looking forward to next season and using what this has taught me out on the pitch.

“To experience two finals at Wembley is every boy’s dream, so I’m really thankful to the club for taking me on loan this season and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Godfrey’s first trip to Wembley this season was a disappointment, as they lost 1-0 to Lincoln City in the Checkatrade Trophy final in early April. However, Godfrey believes Shrewsbury will be better off for the experience.

“We lost on the day, which hurt,” he said. “Now I think I’m grateful for the experience and you can learn from what you did wrong and we’ve got a second bite of the cherry to leave Wembley with a smile on our face this time.

“I expected us to bounce back after the disappointment and we did. We need to carry our performances into the final now. We’re going to prepare correctly and give it 110%.

“Rotherham are hard to break down, really organised and in your face. We’ve got to earn the right to play first, and go and do what we do best.”
