Russell Martin's Captain's Blog, with Fosters Solicitors

Russell Martin’s Captain’s Blog is brought to you by Norwich City’s legal partner, Fosters Solicitors

Nothing in the squad’s mentality has changed since last Friday’s game. One minute before kick-off we had a chance to get promoted to the Premier League and this was still the case one minute after the game was finished.

Obviously it was disappointing for everyone to lose that match but we showed in our performance how much it means and how much desire the squad has to get promoted. Whenever we have suffered setbacks or disappointment this season, we have bounced back and with the belief and positivity we have in ourselves and each other, we will be heading to Rotherham to ensure that is the case again.

The determination in the squad is huge and we have to do all we can in the next week to try and get two wins in our last two matches and see where it takes us. I firmly believe there is a surprise or two in store still left in the race for promotion and even if everyone in the top four wins this weekend it will make for an exciting last day that will test the nerve of those leading the pack with others so close behind.

We have done brilliantly to get ourselves back into the mix and now we need to finish the job off.

There is no secret to our fantastic run of form away from home under the gaffer. Our mentality or approach is the same as if we are playing at home and this is one of the main reasons we have done so well recently.

What does change is the opposition’s approach. I think most have come to Carrow Road this season to sit behind the ball and make it hard for us to break down and try and counter-attack us whereas at their own grounds they maybe feel like they have to play on the front foot more and play a bit more expansively and open than they would or did at Carrow Road.

Wherever we go we aim to dominate the ball and play to our strengths and this approach is great because after all, nothing much changes apart from in the stands. The pitches are all roughly the same size, the goals are the same, the ball is still round. As players we go into an away game with no fear and the freedom to express ourselves on the ball.

When a management team trusts you to go out and play the way they want you to at home or away it gives you great confidence and I think this has certainly shown on our travels. Of course our fantastic away support wherever we go give us a helping hand as well - at Leeds in particular the travelling fans were excellent and gave the lads a lift.

Since the last blog I have signed a new three-year contract. It means a lot to me playing for this club and I am delighted to commit again for another three seasons. I thought that we would sit down in the summer and discuss my future but once it was mentioned in February I was keen to get it done quickly as me and my family are happy here and my time at the club to date has been a very enjoyable one and the most successful of my career.

Waiting to see what league we were in first wasn’t in my thoughts. Of course I want to be back playing in the Premier League but I also want to be playing there for this club and I still believe I will be next season.

When I first signed I remember being described by someone as a Peterborough reject, which of course I wasn’t very happy about and didn’t agree with! I never envisaged still being here six seasons later after two promotions, three years in the top flight (and a relegation) and another promotion-challenging season.

On top of that I’ve played nearly 20 times for Scotland. It’s been an amazing journey for me and I still feel I have a lot more to offer and I now have the chance to show that.

I appreciate everything this club has given me and hopefully I’ve repaid Norwich City and will continue to do so. 224 games and counting….not bad for a Peterborough reject!
