Community Hero - May 31

Norwich City is delighted to highlight our ninth weekly Community Hero, showcasing the story of those special individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Richard Leigh has been nominated for his incredible fundraising challenge of walking a mile every day to help raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre Norfolk, so far raising over £5000.

Richard was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1997 and has benefited from the MS centre since he first attended in 2012.

The centre has an average of 350 users per week to help those in Norfolk who are affected by a long-term neurological condition, offering a range of support services to assist their well-being. However due to lockdown restrictions, the centre is at risk of closing unless it finds support.

“When the lockdown started in March, I realised that none of the small charities would continue to receive funding so I thought if I don’t do something, we will lose the centre," Richard said.

“I have covered 39 miles so far with my walker and will continue until I reach my target of £8000 to help cover the basic costs of rent over the next difficult few months."

Richard has volunteered at the centre for eight years, offering benefits advice and helping to staff the reception desk twice a week.

“The centre helps provide a vital service for anyone who has a neurological condition, helping people to gain independence and strength through the wide range of therapies available such as, physiotherapy, yoga and pilates," he said.

“If the centre is forced to close, people will then be stuck at home not doing any exercises and may suffer mentally as the centre helps people have a reason to get out of the house.

“The support from family and friends and a lot of people who I don’t know has been very heartening. My friends from the centre are continuing to send me encouraging messages so the support I have received has just been overwhelming,” continued Richard.

For the upcoming period, the club would like to highlight a special Community Hero each week, championing the story of those special individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty during these challenging times.

There are no restrictions as to who can nominate or be nominated. If there is anyone that you think deserves special recognition, whether the individual works in the emergency services, is a carer or charity champion - nominate someone by filling in the form today!
