Community Heroes: Norwich City v Leeds United

As part of Sunday's fixture championing sustainability in football, our Community Heroes, in partnership with Fosters’ Solicitors, are Elliot Arthur Worsop and Barney Weston.

Elliot and Barney are the co-directors of Football For Future (FFF), which since October 2020, has been tackling the climate emergency by utilising with the power and popularity of football, and working with clubs from Premier League to non-league level.

Speaking about how Football For Future was started, Elliot said: “A couple of years ago I was studying a masters degree and had to do a placement in my final year.

“I wanted to work for a football organisation focused on environmental sustainability, but no such organisation existed at the time, so I got in touch with some other football fans, who also wanted to make the link with sustainability, and together we brought Football For Future to life.

“Over half of the world’s population are football fans, and football is only just starting to realise its role in tackling climate change – so there is really exciting potential.”

“We describe Football For Future as the home of sustainability in English football,” added Barney. “I think it’s easy to understand if you think of it as the Kick It Out of climate change. We are redefining what it means to be a football fan, and to be someone who cares about climate change. Nobody’s perfect, but we are all key players when it comes to passing on a better planet.

“Our team and trustees are all climate experts and football fans, which is what separates us from a lot of other sustainability organisations. So, whilst everything we do is underpinned by peer-reviewed climate science, we are equally passionate about championing the very best of football culture. We are by the football community, for the football community.

“Our mission is to build a more sustainable culture in English football. We do this by raising awareness of the relationship between football and climate change, and supporting individuals and organisations across the football industry to become more environmentally sustainable.”
