AHEAD of Norwich City's Emirates FA Cup third round meeting with Southampton at Carrow Road, we provide some background info...

PREVIOUS CUP MEETINGS
Saturday will mark the fourth FA Cup tie between Norwich City and Southampton, with the latest encounter coming in the competition's fifth round in February 2003.

Southampton emerged as 2-0 victors on that day, eventually progressing all the way to the Final where they were beaten by Arsenal.

The sides have met just once at Carrow Road in the FA Cup, with City securing a 2-1 sixth round replay success in March 1992.

Spoils have been shared in the League Cup, each side having one victory to their name; Southampton winning 4-0 in 1968 and City coming out on top 2-0 en route to reaching the Final.

A similar record exists in the now discontinued Full Members Cup, Saints chalking up a 2-1 victory in 1986 before the Canaries won by the same scoreline in March 1991.

The most recent meeting in knockout competition came in 2009 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, Southampton triumphing on penalties with the scores level at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Claude Puel sees no reason to deviate from the formula that has brought his Saints side success in cup competition so far this season.

Following this weekend's game, Puel has a few days to prepare his players for the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.

He told southamptonfc.com: "We began, for example, in the League Cup with this spirit, with young players, with character, and now we have got to play a semi-final.

"The spirit for me is the same and it’s important to keep this.

"I think this game against Norwich, in the FA Cup, is important for the club and for the young players also. It is a chance for some players to continue their work I think and to improve."

FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

This weekend could see the return of Nathan Redmond to Norwich City, with the winger having left Norfolk to join Southampton in the summer in what was a club-record sale for the Canaries.

Saints’ Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster are also familiar faces, having spent time on loan at Norwich from 2008 to 2009 and between 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Craig Fleming, Dave Watson and Martin Hunter all form part of the backroom team across various levels at St Mary’s, with the former enjoying a highly successful ten-year playing spell with City from 1997 to 2007.

Among others to have represented both clubs throughout history are Andrew Surman, Andy Townsend, Darren Kenton, Kevin Bond, Mick Channon and Youssef Safri.
