Adams, 21, is currently on loan at Sky Bet League One high-flyers Shrewsbury Town and qualifies to play for Gambia through his parents.

The midfielder will join up with squad on Wednesday in Morocco ahead of two friendlies over the next week.

“I think I’ve been on their radar ever since I got my loan move to Shrewsbury,” said Adams.

“I was coming back from the Peterborough game and I got an email saying that I was in the squad. I was buzzing and I can’t wait to join up with the squad.

“I’m pleased, my loved ones are pleased and my family is pleased. Both my Mum and Dad are from there, so it was good news to tell them and they were over the moon to know that I’m going to play for their country and my country as well.”

The West African nation are currently ranked 164th in the world, but they have players playing across Europe and Adams is looking forward to testing himself on the international stage.

“To be known as an international player as a youngster is good and it gives me a bit of exposure,” he continued.

“They’ve got players like Mustapha Carayol (Nottingham Forest) and Modou Barrow (Reading) who are their two main players and they are decent players and they play a good standard, so going there should be good.

“It was a surprise because I wasn’t expecting to be called-up anytime soon, but it’s a bonus and a reward and I’ve just got to try and take it with both hands.”
