JACOB Murphy found the net for Coventry City on Saturday, but couldn't prevent the Sky Blues from being knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Having been drawn at home to Northampton Town, Tony Mowbray's team went 1-0 down inside the opening five minutes when Nicky Adams' free-kick found the net.

The Cobblers' lead was short-lived, with Murphy driving home superbly from distance to bring his side level shortly after.

A frenetic opening was completed on 18 minutes, as Marc Richards headed home to send Northampton into the second round courtesy of a 2-1 win.

The first round also saw Louis Thompson play the full match as Swindon Town bowed out of the competition by being beaten 3-1 at Rochdale.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's hat-trick wrapped up the game, with Nicky Ajose scoring from the penalty-spot for Town late on.

Another City representative to see cup action was goalkeeper Remi Matthews, who started Burton Albion's tie against Peterborough United.

Matthews was unable to help his side progress to the next stage however, as a brace from Conor Washington and a further goal from Jermaine Anderson saw Posh ease to a 3-0 win.

Fellow Academy goalkeeper Ben Killip was between the sticks for Lowestoft Town as they drew 2-2 at home to Solihull Moors in the Vanarama National North.

The youngster then returned to the City set-up to feature for the Under-21s in their narrow loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

In the Sky Bet Championship, Gary Hooper played 66 minutes for Sheffield Wednesday as they slipped to a surprise 3-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic.

The Owls had been unbeaten since early September in all competitions, while Charlton went into the game struggling towards the bottom of the division.

However, the hosts raced into a 3-0 lead before the hour-mark, ahead of Wednesday registering a consolation late on through Fernando Forestieri.

City defender Michael Turner is also on loan with the Owls but missed the match due to an ongoing knee injury.

Elsewhere in the second tier, Elliott Bennett started Bristol City's 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers, eventually being substituted in the 83rd minute.

Wanderers had the best chance to win the game, only for Shola Ameobi's penalty to be saved by Robins goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

Meanwhile, Rotherham United were beaten 5-2 at home by Ipswich Town, with left-back Harry Toffolo playing the opening 85 minutes.

Town cruised into a 4-0 lead early in the second half, before two quick-fire United goals put them back in the contest.

Despite rallying, Rotherham were eventually consigned to defeat when Daryl Murphy struck his third of the game 18 minutes from time.

Tony Andreu was an unused substitute for the Millers, who are now five points from safety at the bottom of the league.

Also towards the lower reaches of the division are MK Dons, who went down 2-1 to high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion at The Amex Stadium.

Josh Murphy came off the bench for the final 19 minutes, as early strikes from the Seagulls' Solly March and Jamie Murphy proved decisive despite Nicky Maynard pulling a goal back for the visitors.

The away side controversially had strong calls for a penalty turned down in the second period, leaving Karl Robinson's men just above the relegation-zone.

North of the border, Carlton Morris played the entire match as Hamilton Academical went down 2-0 at Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

First half goals from Prince Buaben and Arnaud Djoum settled the contest, meaning Hamilton are now without a win since September.

Finally, Ricky van Wolfswinkel was an unused substitute for Real Betis in their 1-0 win away to Malaga in Spain's La Liga.
