Dons fall at the final hurdle in the Betfred Cup

JAMES Maddison's Aberdeen lost 3-0 to Celtic in Sunday's Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park.

Maddison completed 90 minutes but Derek McInnes' side were well beaten by the Hoops, who picked up their 100th major trophy and first under Brendan Rodgers.

First half goals from Tom Rogic and James Forrest put Celtic in a commanding position, and Aberdeen only briefly flirted with a comeback before Moussa Dembele's 64th-minute penalty ended the final as a contest.

McInnes said afterwards: "It was not the experience we wanted. It is important we try and pick ourselves up."

Maddison was the only City loanee in action: north of the border Tony Andreu's Dundee United had a weekend off, while Hamilton Academical drew 1-1 with Ross County in the Scottish Premiership but Remi Matthews was absent as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury.

In Sky Bet League One, Declan Rudd (hip) missed Charlton Athletic's 1-1 draw with Sheffield United while league leaders Scunthorpe United, without Harry Toffolo, were held to a 1-1 draw by Oxford United at Glanford Park.
