The Young Lions continued their bright start to the season with the win in Cova da Piedade on Thursday afternoon, after starting their campaign with wins against the Netherlands and Belgium last month.

Aarons received the international call-up for the second time after establishing himself in Daniel Farke’s side this season, starting nine games for the Canaries in all competitions.

And he has continued to impress England youth team manager Keith Downing, earning a place in his squad once again.

England dominated proceedings throughout the game, with two close efforts from Emile Smith-Rowe early on. But Portugal thought they had taken the lead just before the break when a free-kick wasn’t cleared, and the ball ended up in the net after a scramble. Fortunately for the Young Lions, the referee spotted a handball and ruled it out.

England found their scoring touch after the restart though, with goals from Smith-Row, Felix Nmecha on his Under19s debut, England captain Marc Guehi and substitute Ian Poveda-Ocampo.

Downing’s squad will now head back to St George’s Park, where they will face Macedonia on Tuesday at 2pm.

And with their Under-19 Euro qualifiers coming up in Turkey next month, the squad are building up some good momentum as they take their first step towards next summer's Euro Finals in Armenia.
