Hooper and Howson play an hour on injury comeback

GARY Hooper and Jonny Howson both successfully came through an hour for Norwich City’s Under-21s as they beat Leicester City 5-0 at Colney Training Centre on Friday afternoon.

The pair, who picked up calf and knee injuries respectively in pre-season, saw their first competitive action of the campaign as over-age players in the Barclays Under-21s Premier League encounter.

Hooper broke the deadlock after just eleven minutes when he latched onto a pinpoint through ball from Howson, before the latter gained another assist midway through the opening half, setting up Jamar Loza for the first goal of a hat-trick.

Jacob Murphy saw a low effort expertly kept out by Foxes’ goalkeeper John Maddison, who then spread himself to block an audacious close-range overhead kick from Hooper minutes later.

Leicester grew into the game in the second half, with Jak McCourt seeing a free-kick flash wide on 58 minutes in the middle of good spell of pressure.

Up the other end, the lively Loza found the sidenetting from the angle and Ignasi Miquel, also making his first appearance in yellow and green, nodded just over the bar from a central position.

They put the game beyond doubt in fine style on 78 minutes when Loza skipped inside from the right flank and beat Maddison with a firm left-footed strike.

As the visitors pushed forward, City exploited the gaps in their defence and after substitutes Cameron McGeehan and Cameron King spurned decent chances Loza completed his treble, again causing havoc off the wing before netting from close range.

He turned provider for City’s fifth in the final minute, with McGeehan converting his cross to further increase the emphatic scoreboard difference between the two teams.
