THE Canaries face the first of two trips to Manchester this week when they take on United in the Capital One Cup Fourth Round at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Chris Hughton admitted at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning that he will be utilising the depth of his squad, but made it very clear that he wishes to progress to a second consecutive quarter-final in the competition.

Having had more shots that any single team in any Premier League game this season against Cardiff, there will be no shortage of belief that, like many teams have done so far this season, they can cause the champions some problems.

David Moyes’ United are unbeaten in five, though, and will be buoyed by the come-from-behind nature of their 3-2 victory over Stoke City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

They have won 33 of the 62 games between the two clubs, with the Canaries triumphing on 16 occasions. The other 13 matches have ended all square.

Shinji Kagawa’s hat-trick sent Manchester United on their way to a victory that saw them extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 15 points - but they didn’t have it all their own against the Canaries.

Three of their last four goals came in the final 15 minutes as Chris Hughton’s side pressed for an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be as defeat brought them back down to earth after the previous week’s dramatic Premier League against Everton.

Hughton said afterwards: “Conceding just before half-time hurt us but we were still very much in the game.

"We conceded a poor second. You have to make decision - settle for that or give yourself an opportunity to get back into the game. When you try to get back into the game you open up and there's no better team than united to capitalise.

"This was never going to define our season, but we're certainly disappointed.”

Leicestershire official Kevin Friend will take charge of his eighth game of the season at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

He refereed Manchester City’s 5-0 triumph over Wigan Athletic in the last round of the Capital One Cup, while his latest assignment was Coventry City’s 3-2 win over Sheffield United over a fortnight ago.

Friend’s last Norwich City game was the Canaries’ 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa at the end of last season. He also took charge of last year’s Capital One Cup Final between Bradford City and Swansea City.
