Match Preview: Norwich City v Sheffield United

Norwich City return to league action this weekend when they host Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United at Carrow Road on Sunday (2pm KO).

Our Match Preview includes opposition analysis, an overview of this fixture’s history, and a look at who will be the man in the middle.

There are also details for Sheffield United fans travelling to Norwich, including security information, as well as a guide on how to follow the action for those who aren’t at the ground.

The Opposition

The Blades are a team City know well after both achieved promotion via the Sky Bet Championship last season.

United finished five points behind City in second place but have started strongly in their first Premier League campaign for 12 years.

Praised for their defensive solidity last year, they’ve continued where they left off, currently having the third best defensive record (15 conceded) in the division, only behind Leicester City (9) and Liverpool (14).

A number of players who helped the Blades clinch promotion last year have featured in their opening 15 league games of this season.

Familiar back five of George Baldock, Chris Basham, John Egan, Jack O’Connell and Enda Stevens have started every game so far, with the exception of Egan who missed the draw with Manchester United in November.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson is sure to keep net once again, with midfield duo of Ollie Norwood and John Fleck having also kept their regular spots in the XI from last year.

Other familiar faces include David McGoldrick, who spent five years at Ipswich Town, and John Lundstram, who has become a key player for the Blades in the Premier League after only making 12 appearances in the whole of last year.

Leading marksman is Lys Mousset (pictured below) who has scored five goals this season, as many as he got in three seasons with AFC Bournemouth prior to joining the Bramall Lane club in the summer.

Wilder’s men are unbeaten away from home this season (one win, six draws) but do go into the weekend’s game off the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United on Thursday night.

History of the fixture

City have a superior record over their Sheffield counterparts, having won 29 and drawn 18 of the 71 encounters.

City have won eight of their last 13 meetings with the Blades but last beat them at Carrow Road back in 2010.

Last time United visited Carrow Road was back in January. City went ahead twice through Onel Hernandez and Teemu Pukki but were twice pegged back, with both of United's goals coming from Billy Sharp. The match ended 2-2.

Man in the middle

Simon Hooper will referee Sunday's game and be assisted by Neil Davies and Derek Eaton. The fourth official will be Ollie Yates, with Peter Bankes and Stephen Child overseeing VAR.

Hooper has refereed three Premier League games this term, two of them Blades' fixtures, and last officiated the Canaries in October of last season when they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Carrow Road.
