Match Reports

City well-beaten at QPR

2 April 2018

Norwich City were beaten 4-1 by Queens Park Rangers at Carrow Road on Easter Monday.

City took the lead when Ryan Manning diverted the ball into his own net on 38 minutes, however the hosts equalised immediately following a precise finish from Massimo Luongo.

QPR dominated the second-half and goals from Matt Smith, Ebere Eze and Manning saw them run out comfortable winners.

Daniel Farke said after the Fulham defeat on Good Friday that he would make changes and he stuck to his word, making four in total. There was a straight swap at left-back as James Husband came in for Jamal Lewis and Grant Hanley returned at centre-back in place of Timm Klose. Alex Tettey was rested for Wes Hoolahan and Nelson Oliveira deputised up-front for Dennis Srbeny.

The game began at a frenetic pace with both sides looking a threat going forward. However, it was City who looked the more likely to open the scoring after a number of half-chances.

Murphy was twice released after superb passes forward in the opening ten minutes but on both occasions, QPR stopper Alex Smithies did well to rush out and claim the ball. Then on 13 minutes, James Maddison found the returning Oliveira in the box but his goalbound strike was deflected just wide.

Hoolahan was looking very dangerous in the opening exchanges and he was involved in City’s best move of the opening half an hour. On 26 minutes, Mario Vrancic clipped the ball wide to Husband whose precise pass found the Irishman on the edge of the area. His lay-off was perfect for Oliveira but he could only fire over the bar from a good position.

QPR began to have more joy as the game approached the interval and went close on 35 minutes when Smith’s header crashed against the post.

However, City took the lead moments later when a quick break resulted in Harrison Reed finding Murphy in the area. His touch was a tad heavy but that didn’t matter as a couple of ricochets off QPR defenders saw the ball end up in the net, with the own goal being awarded to Manning.

The lead lasted a matter of seconds though as Luongo stormed forward and played a one-two with Smith before squeezing the ball past Angus Gunn and into the bottom corner.

QPR then seized the advantage within ten minutes of the restart. A cross from left-back Jake Bidwell was cleared but only as far as Josh Scowen whose shot deflected into the air and was met by Smith who managed to beat Gunn and nod the ball home.

Smith turned provider moments later for the hosts’ third. A cross-field ball was met by the tall Hoops forward and his knockdown fell kindly for Eze who guided the ball into the far corner.

City tried their utmost to get back into the match shortly after. Oliveira shot over from distance and headed just wide with around 25 minutes to play before Christoph Zimmermann nodded Maddison’s corner over from a good position.

Then on 70 minutes, Oliveira went mightily to close to giving City a lifeline. Murphy broke forward and spotted City’s number nine to his left but Oliveira’s low shot trickled inches wide of the far post.

But the result was put beyond doubt in the final ten minutes as Manning made it four, leaping highest in the box to head home Bidwell’s cross.
