Kamara nets a hat-trick in FA Youth Cup win

18 December 2020

A hat-trick from Abu Kamara saw Norwich City comfortably into round four of the FA Youth Cup with a 4-2 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was a dominant display, at England's St George's Park, as the young Canaries put in a performance to match the grand surroundings as they controlled the game from the moment they took the lead in the sixth minute.

Wolves started the match brightly with Owen Heskett curling an early shot wide, but playing against a back three, Norwich looked a threat in wide areas all game with both Tony Springett, on the right, and Jonathan Rowe, on the left, causing problems

They were ably assisted by both the full backs as well as the occasional runs from the strikers Kamara and Tom Dickson Peters into the channels.

It was one of these runs, from Dickson Peters, that created Norwich’s first chance on five minutes as he got onto the end of a ball from Stewart before wriggling past a couple of challenges and going down in the box. The referee was unmoved by the penalty appeals though.

A minute later though and the Canaries had their opener as Dickson Peters played in Tony Springett in on the right side of the box and he found the bottom corner superbly with an angled effort.

Wolves looked dangerous from corner though and should have been level on 11 minutes when Hugo Bueno timed his jump well but headed a Jack Hodnett cross wide from six yards out.

Springett then continued his excellent start to the game as he won the ball back high up and played low ball into the box, where a perfectly timed run from Kamara left him with the freedom of the Wolves penalty box to side foot home the second.

Wolves managed to pull a goal back just after the half hour mark when a sliding challenge from Nelson Khumbeni gave them a free-kick on the edge of the box that Christian Marquez expertly curled home.

However, in open play, it was Norwich who were looking the more threatening, especially on the counter-attack. The Canaries did well to win the ball back high again on 41 minutes and Dickson Peters crossed for Kamara who brought a great save out of Joe Young with a first-time shot.

Then two minutes later the same two players combined again, and Kamara showed great composure to cushion the low ball in, with two defenders around him, before wrong-footing the Wolves keeper with a reverse finish.

Wolves started the second half with a bit of possession around the Norwich box but failed to bring a save out of Sam Blair before Kamara made it 4-1 on 57 minutes as he met a cross from the left and finished well to claim his hat-trick.

That took the sting out of any potential Wolves comeback and Norwich controlled the following 20 minutes and Kamara exited the field 13 minutes from time, to applause, to be replaced by Alex Matos.

Wolves then had a shot from the edge of the box from Harkin that forced Blair into his first save of the the second half that he comfortably gathered. Wolves managed to get a goal back in the first minute of injury time through Justin Hubner but it proved to be no more than a consolation.
