Norwich City Under-23s settled for a point after two late goals levelled the scoring for Burnley in their clash on Monday afternoon.
After nearly a month away from league action, the U23s made the lengthy trip to Tameside Stadium, where they battled it out with the Clarets.
David Wright named five changes from the side that lost out 1-0 to Newcastle United in the young Canaries’ last game, Ethen Vaughan, Jaden Warner, Nelson Khumbeni, Tony Springett and Abu Kamara all coming into the starting eleven.
City worked hard to find the first chance of the game in the 14th minute, after a Burnley foul put set-piece specialist Rob Nizet within shooting distance of the target. The Belgian left-back stepped up to the free-kick, just sending it wide of goal early on.
Eight minutes later and it was Burnley who found the next chance of the game, this one ending up in the back of the net as Lewis Richardson finished from close range, but the goal was chalked off for a foul in the build-up.
The young Canaries made that chance count when Kamara next had the ball up the other end of the pitch, the striker opening his body up and curling his shot into the top corner for the terrific opener.
Using that momentum, City doubled their lead before half time when a long-ball from Joe Rose found Matthew Dennis in a promising position, giving the Canaries striker ample opportunity to finish past the Clarets’ ‘keeper before half time.
The hosts’ came out swinging for the second half as they looked to reduce their deficit early, finding a good few chances, but it was Joel Mumbongo who had the best of them as they all ended fruitless.
After dealing with the Clarets’ pressure for most of the second half, a crack had shown for Burnley to jump on as a rebound off the post found Richardson to nod home from just a few yards out from Rose.
With less than ten minutes to go, Burnley found another key chance in getting themselves level, substitute Dara Costelloe making his impact as he finished in front of goal for the leveller.
Despite disappointment taking just a point after finding themselves in a winning position for most of the game, the draw was still a good result against a tough Burnley side chasing the title at the top of the table.
