Under-23s head coach Alan Neilson felt his side could have done better despite ending a run of three straight league defeats with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City.
The under-23s won the match with penalty from Todd Cantwell and a late strike from Jon Rowe, but Neislon felt there was elements of the performance that the team had to improbve on.
"I think it was a performance where we could do better," he said. "The passing wasn’t up to our standard. The pitch was a little bit tricky, but we have still got to play our game.
"We are a passing team and we will make mistakes, and I have said that to the team, but pass the ball and make options. Sometimes we can’t always play in front of teams. We might have to look in behind them if they are going to close the space down in midfield. Then we might have to look to go down the sides and play forwards a little bit quicker."
The Canaries in their previous three matches had created and scored plenty of goals, but also conceded far too many. Neilson admitted he thought the defensive display was better agauinst Birmingham and that defending a high line, helped them create the second goal.
"I thought the second half there was still things we could have improved on defensively, in terms of not giving them as much space," he said.
"Why we squeeze up is so that we can make good contact with the first header and that there is no space for them to play in really. It showed from the second goal that we created, in terms of the move, it was knocked up and Jon Tomkinson won it on the halfway line and got a header through and Abu (Kamara) got in on goal and the lad brought him down and it was a penalty. It just shows you how important it is to hold a high line and attack the ball."
Kamara had his penalty saved, but Jon Rowe was there to follow up and score, which delighted Neislon.
"Jonny Rowe tonight was really sharp," he said. "Jonny is part of the team to get ball and to drive at people and his reaction for the penalty I was really, really pleased about. We always say the rebound that it is a striker’s job. It is not always about scoring great goals it is about scoring goals that win games and he was there, lively, on the edge of the box and when the penalty was saved he was there to put it in the back of the net."
