Happy new year and welcome back to Carrow Road.
Printing deadlines over the holiday period means that it is impossible to provide an update on the position of head coach in these programme notes, but we will of course be updating throughout the process.
Although most of the attention on the club relates to on-field matters, the quick succession of home games allows us to reflect on some of our work off the pitch.
Against Blackburn and Reading, many of you will have seen our new Duncan Forbes mural, which is situated between the Regency Security Stand and the Joma Community Stand on Geoffrey Watling Way. This was unveiled by Duncan’s family, along with Delia and Michael.
Duncan’s legend lives on and this is a wonderful, emotive tribute to one of the best players to pull on our club colours.
Although he is remembered by supporters for his distinguished playing career here, Duncan also went on to have various roles on and off the field at Carrow Road.
As part of the planning for the project it was important to work with his family to create a memorial that meant something to them personally, as well as the wider Norwich City community. We are all delighted with the outcome.
We hold our former players dear to our hearts and the Reading game gave us the opportunity to host another one of our recent greats with the return of Christoph Zimmermann and his family.
Christoph spent five years with the club before returning to Germany at the end of last season to play for SV Darmstadt 98.
He is another incredibly popular player and we were delighted to welcome Christoph and his family back to Norwich as our special guests.
Christoph was part of a hugely successful side in the Championship and, during his time here, he created a special bond with everyone at the club and within the local community.
This is a demanding period, with three home games in a short space of time, and next weekend we will focus on one of English football’s great traditions when we face Blackburn in the Emirates FA Cup.
Our memories of Blackburn’s recent visit to Carrow Road are not good. This will be an opportunity for our players to put that performance and result firmly behind them.
Although the league fixture ended in disappointment, our work in the community continued with a ticketing scheme for underprivileged people in the area.
As part of our involvement with Nourishing Norfolk, 180 underprivileged families from Thetford were able to attend the Blackburn game in the league.
For many of them it was their first experience of professional football and we continued with our support of Nourishing Norfolk through the provision of tickets for the Reading game. We are also continuing with our commitment to providing discounted cup tickets against Blackburn next weekend.
This is an important period and we want to begin the New Year with optimism, ambition and the drive to make this another memorable season in the history of the club.
