Norwich City were beaten 2-0 by West Ham United at London Stadium on Wednesday night, with Jarrod Bowen netting a goal in each half.
City headed to east London for the rearranged fixture, following the postponement of the match originally scheduled for December 18, 2021.
The Hammers had the ball in the net twice in the first-half, courtesy of Bowen on both occasions. However, only his second counted, with the first being ruled out by VAR for offside. His legitimate goal came on 42 minutes as he headed home Vladimir Coufal's cross.
City went close through a fierce Adam Idah strike in the second-half but West Ham sealed the victory with just seven minutes remaining when Bowen got his second of the game.
Dean Smith made seven changes from City's FA Cup win over Charlton Athletic on Sunday, with both Milot Rashica and Teemu Pukki among those to come into the side after impressing when introduced at The Valley.
Max Aarons and Idah were both named in the starting eleven, as they made their 150th and 50th appearances for the club respectively.
The hosts went into the match fifth in the Premier League and made a bright start, Manuel Lanzini finding Bowen in the area inside two minutes and forcing Tim Krul into a smart save.
Minutes later, Lanzini had a strike of his own after Nikola Vlasic jinked past Pierre Lees-Melou on the left, but the Argentine's strike was wayward.
City weren't deterred by the Hammers' pressure though and looked sharp in attack early on. McLean blasted one over on ten minutes after neat football involving Pukki, Idah and Rashica.
Then on 13 minutes, Brandon Williams surged forward and played it to Idah who squared for Rashica, but a tame effort was claimed by Lukasz Fabianski.
A quiet 15 minutes then ensued after the hectic start, but the corners were totting up for the hosts, with City having to be alert at deliveries from wide areas.
On 33 minutes, West Ham were awarded a free-kick on the right hand side, which was smartly laid back to Lanzini on the edge of the area, but once again his effort flew miles over the crossbar.
Moments later, West Ham thought they'd took the lead when Bowen fizzed an inswinging cross which went all the way through the bodies and into Krul's far corner, however VAR ruled the goal out, as Vlasic was offside as the ball came in.
On 42 minutes, Bowen had the ball in the net once more, but it wasn't ruled out on this occasion, as he met Coufal's cross to nod home the opening goal.
The Hammers looked to pick up where they left off early in the second-half, as striker Michail Antonio went close when Pablo Fornals found him in the box but his turn and strike ended with the ball going over.
Shortly after, City threatened once more in behind the West Ham defence as Pukki's cross just evaded the head of Idah.
Bowen almost got a second on 58 minutes, as Fornals' through ball saw him clear in the box, but his lofted effort clipped the top of the crossbar.
Bowen was a thorn in City's side and struck the base of the post on 62 minutes from a tight angle as the hosts looked for a second goal.
At the other end, Idah continued to look the most threatening of City's attacking outlet and he dispossessed Bowen on 68 minutes and sent a fierce drive towards the top corner, which Fabianski had to tip onto the post.
Dean Smith introduced Kieran Dowell and Christos Tzolis midway through the second-half, in a bid to freshen things up in an attacking sense.
With 15 minutes to play, Jonathan Rowe came on for just his second appearance at senior level and he put in and important defensive block for his first touch.
Despite the changes, West Ham got their second goal on 83 minutes when substitute Arthur Masuaku's cross was turned home by Bowen. It was initially ruled out for offside, but follow a VAR check, Bowen was ruled onside and the goal was given.
That proved to be enough for the Hammers to take all three points. Next up for the Canaries is the visit of Everton to Carrow Road on Saturday (3pm KO).
