Norwich City played out a 1-1 draw with AZ Alkmaar at Sportcomplex VV Dirkshorn as their pre-season schedule continued in the Netherlands.

Norwich had taken the lead early on through Ashley Barnes but conceded just four minutes later, the game's only two goals coming in the first 10 minutes.

City started well, applying pressure to force two corner kicks but without managing to test the goalkeeper.

However, it didn't take long for Barnes to get on the scoresheet, slotting home from the penalty spot after a quick free-kick to Sarge had been pushed into his path.

That concession seemed to spark the home team into life and they were level within five minutes.

Ernest Poku pushed his way down the right before finding Ruben van Bommel who fired home at the back post.

City nearly nudged back in front when Jonathan Rowe's driving run allowed him to find Jack Stacey. The right-back played the ball across the face of goal but it evaded everyone in yellow.

Another burst forward from Stacey opened the AZ defence once more but Onel Hernández's strike was off-target.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Mathew Ryan was on top form to deny Rowe twice in less than a minute, getting a strong right hand on the first effort before getting down well to his left to gather the second.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half provided little in terms of goalscoring opportunities. Myron van Brederode's curling effort from the edge of the post was just narrowly outside the post of the Norwich goal, now occupied by Tim Krul.

Marcelino Núñez was also called upon, getting himself in the way of a shot from Kenzo Goudmijn while Ben Gibson twice made important interventions in the closing stages.
