Norwich City returned after the World Cup break with a 1-0 win away to Swansea City in the Sky Bet Championship.
In chilly conditions in south Wales, it was a goal in the first minute that would prove to be the difference.
Finnish striker Teemu Pukki fired home from a Kenny McLean flick-on and some resolute defending late in the second half would confirm the win.
It could have been 1-0 to Norwich within 10 seconds as Pukki was put through on goal by Danel Sinani but the chance was snuffed out at the cost of a corner.
A second Gabriel Sara corner followed which McLean headed towards the back post and this time Pukki fired in via the woodwork.
The hosts responded by trying to win possession high up the field. A free-kick would prove their best chance as a scramble, including a block by Grant Hanley, resulted in Angus Gunn getting his body down on the ball.
The goalkeeper would also make himself big to deny Jamie Paterson.
The hosts maintained possession well throughout the half but the better chances were falling to the visitors.
Josh Sargent came close twice in quick succession. First, he intercepted the ball in the middle of the park before putting his head down and running for goal. Unfortunately, his shot was pulled wide.
Moments later, Isaac Hayden drove forward from deep and the ball found its way to Sara whose cross was just out of the reach of the USA international who was flying in at the back post.
Chances were few and far between for large parts of the second period.
As the game wore on, the hosts made some breakthroughs but were met with resilient defending.
Gunn was called upon to tip over a Manning free-kick and a Kyle Naughton header while Ben Gibson made a vital clearance underneath his own crossbar.
City will now face Blackburn Rovers at home on Saturday, 17 December.
