Norwich City have completed the permanent transfer of Chile international midfielder Marcelino Núñez for an undisclosed fee.

Norwich City have completed the permanent transfer of Chile international midfielder Marcelino Núñez for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract with City through to 2026 and joins from Chilean top-flight side Universidad Católica.

Since breaking into the senior setup at Universidad Católica, Núñez has made a total of 83 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals.

He will wear shirt number 26.

Speaking to canaries.co.uk, Núñez said: “I’m really happy to have arrived here and I’m just excited to get started.

“What do I see myself as? Well, I like to get into the box, I like to go for goal. I like to play in set-plays and be involved in and outside of the box.

"Now I’m here at Norwich, I have my objectives and I want to achieve everything that I can with the club.”

Núñez has two Chilean Primera División league titles to his name, as well as experience in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

He has ten senior caps with the Chile national side. His first, and to date only, international goal came in a FIFA World Cup qualification game against Bolivia in January 2022.

In signing for City, Núñez becomes the first Chilean player to join the club.

Head coach Dean Smith said: “We’re really pleased to have Marcelino in. He’s a player that we believe can connect us from back to front.

“He can see a pass and open things up. He also scored some wonderful goals out in South America. His all-round game is one that we feel is going to suit us and what we’ve needed.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming him to the club and working with him.”

The transfer is subject to international clearance and the approval of a work permit.
