City forward Ellie Smith bagged the only goal of the game in Norwich’s 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon Ladies for the club’s fourth successive win and to help avoid the drop with one game to go.

“I’m lost for words to be honest, I mean it was a must win game today. They haven't lost since August - we were very much underdogs, so to come out and win is just incredible.”

Next season, City will no longer be the only Norfolk side in the league, as Wymondham Ladies join the FAWNL Division One South East after securing promotion in February.

“I'm really proud to play here. I’ve played for Norwich all my life and so today is just a great feeling. Norwich City Football Club affiliating themselves with us this year meant we had even more of a reason to win!”

Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute after Jess Harper crossed into the box for the number nine to head in from close range.

“I don't score headers - I don't usually score goals, so it's a rarity! It was a great ball in from Jess and I just followed it in and luckily it fell at the right place.”

The attendance exceeded the usual weekly numbers, with 220 spectators making their way down to the Nest for the team’s final home game of the season.

“I’ve not seen a turnout like this before and hopefully they can keep on coming. I think we played really well today and seeing the youngsters here is brilliant. Hopefully we can be their role models.”

Norwich City’s final game of the season is Sunday, May 1 as they take on fourth-place Queens Park Rangers at Hanwell Town Football Club.
