England international Alex Greenwood is excited about the prospect of taking of Spain in front of supporters at Carrow Road next month.
The international women’s football match forms part of the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup – a competition that will see England, Germany, Spain and Canada battle it out across three different stadiums across the country in late February.
At Carrow Road, on February 20, England will take on Spain in their second match of the tournament at 3.15pm, while Olympic gold medallists Canada will play Germany later that evening.
Speaking about the tournament – which is a chance for Sarina Wiegman’s side to gain valuable preparation ahead of hosting the European Championships this summer - Greenwood said it would be a good test for the Lionesses.
“It’s so exciting. Over the past couple years, we've gone to SheBelieves (an invitational tournament in the USA), and we've seen what type of audiences they attract,” said Greenwood.
“Going there and seeing how that was, I have always said it would be so good to do it in our country. We have the chance to do that in February against some very good opposition as well which will be a very good test for us in the lead up to the summer.”
The Spanish are one of the favourites with star-studded quality in their ranks, including recent Ballon d’Or winner, Alexia Putellas.
Their manager, Jorge Vilda, is relishing the chance to compete in the tournament and against England at Carrow Road.
“For Spain it is a great honour to participate in the first edition of the Arnold Clark Cup alongside world-class teams,” said Vilda. “We are very much looking forward to playing in England in February and hope to see a great show in all of the matches.”
For Greenwood, having the fans behind them is integral to England’s success.
“I can't wait to play in front of our fans. I think my message would be that the support the fans give the Lionesses every time we play is incredible.”
