Teemu Pukki became only the fifth player to play 100 matches for Finland on Tuesday, but the night ultimately ended in disappointment for the Norwich City striker.
Heading into their final group match of 2022 World Cup qualfication, Finland were in a strong position ahead of their clash with France in Helsinki.
Two points ahead of Ukraine and therefore occupying a spot in the play-offs, they knew that maybe even defeat at home to Les Bleus would be enough to see them seal second place.
However, a 2-0 defeat at home to the defending champions, as well as victory for Ukraine against Bosnia and Herzegovina, left Finland with no chance of qualifying for next year's World Cup.
Despite the defeat, Pukki made history by joining Jari Litmanen, Sami Hyypia, Jonatan Johansson and Ari Hjelm as members of the Huuhkajat's 100 club.
Elsewhere in World Cup qualification, Norway's campaign also ended in disappointment as they were beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands. **Mathias Normann** played 74 minutes in Rotterdam but Norway missed out after Turkey's win over Montenegro. **Tim Krul** was an unused substitute for Louis van Gaal's team. In Under-21s European Championship qualifying, **Archie Mair**, currently on loan at Lincoln City, was an unused substitute for Scotland's 2-0 defeat to Belgium. Earlier in the day, **Max Aarons** featured for the final 13 minutes of England Under-21s' 3-2 international friendly defeat to Georgia.🇫🇮 A true Finnish football legend.
