The Irish number nine stepped up to take the penalty after a handball in the box from Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk after four minutes.
Shane Duffy was captain for the evening at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, after returning to Stephen Kenny's starting 11, following his call-up in September.
Both played the full 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland.

He played 90 minutes and got the assist for the first goal, scored by Dimitrios Pelkas, to help put his side level on points with second place Netherlands.
