Jordan Hugill was disappointed with the nature of Norwich City’s defeat to AFC Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
“We’re gutted to be honest,” he said. “We had some good chances but so did they, they played really well, but we were in a good position towards the end of the game.
“To concede that one at the very end and then end up losing the game, we’re gutted more than anything.”
Hugill opened the scoring when he was in the right place at the right time to react to a saved shot from Gabriel Sara.
“I’m on the pitch to score goals and that’s what I’ve done since pre-season,” he said, “so I’m delighted on a personal note but I’m gutted for the team not to go through to the next round.
“To concede with near enough the last kick of the game and lose it on penalties is gutting, but Angus was brilliant tonight, made some unbelievable saves and kept us in the game, but that last one was gutting.”
On a positive note, Hugill was delighted to see Sam Byram and Adam Idah return from injury against Bournemouth.
“Brilliant to see Sam back on the pitch,” he said. “I’ve known him for a long time since I was at West Ham. To see him back playing again is fantastic for me and I’m sure it is for him to come through that as well.
“I love Adam to bits and for him to get a goal is brilliant.”
City now turn attention back to the Sky Bet Championship with a trip to Sunderland on the weekend.
“I’d like to think we can be positive off the back of a few wins in the league with good momentum towards the next game,” Hugill said. “It will be a good one to go to and hopefully we can get ready for Saturday.
“We’ve got good strength in depth in all positions so it’s good to see Sarge scoring goals, Pukki’s back and me and Adam scored tonight, so there’s great competition there and we’re only pushing each other to get better and improve, which is healthy for the squad.”
