Gabriel Sara scored a late winner as Norwich City claimed a 1-0 victory away to Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship.

David Wagner made one change from the side that faced Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday night, with Shane Duffy coming in for Danny Batth.

The game's opening stages were quiet, with a lack of clear chances for both sides. Preston's Liam Lindsay registered the game's first chance, but his header was over the crossbar.

Norwich's first opportunity saw Borja Sainz latch onto Sara's ball forward. His effort from a tight angle was over the bar.

Sainz, again, created an effort on goal. The Spaniard had a go from distance, which forced Freddie Woodman to palm it wide.

Woodman was called into action, saving well from Ashley Barnes' volley, as Norwich began to grow into the game.

Just before half-time, Sara almost opened the scoring with a drilled effort from range, but for a low save from Woodman to tip it behind the post.

There would be a chance for the home side in first-half injury time, as Jack Whatmough's header hit the crossbar.

Josh Sargent had the first chance in the second half, swivelling beyond his marker before volleying wide after Sainz's shot was deflected his way.

Jonny Rowe made his return from injury, replacing Sainz for the final 20 minutes of the game at Deepdale.

The returning Rowe made his presence felt almost immediately, driving at defenders and winning a couple of corners in quick succession.

And four minutes from time, the Canaries were in front. Kenny McLean sent a ball through to Sara, who turned brilliantly. The Brazilian made his way into the box and cut inside, before calmly finishing into the bottom corner.

Sara's late strike would seal the three points, with Norwich remaining in the play-off places in sixth.

The Canaries return to Carrow Road next weekend, as they host Bristol City in the Championship (KO 3pm).
