Norwich City Under-23s midfielder Liam Gibbs was encouraged by the team performance in Friday night’s 1-0 loss at home to Stoke City U23s in the Premier League 2 Division 2.
“It was a game of two halves really,” he said. “In the first half we were really dominant, had a lot of chances, kept the ball in their half and didn’t really let them play so it was a good start to the game, then they changed shape and caused us a few problems so our press wasn’t as effective, but there are a lot of positives to take into the rest of the season.”
Norwich dominated the first-half and it came against the balance of play when Edward Jones gave them the lead with a free-kick in the 40th minute.
“We sort of needed to forget about it and go back to the way we were playing, but it’s hard knowing you’re 1-0 down and we started forcing it and trying to get that goal to level it,” Gibbs added.”
“If we’d have been more patient, maybe we could have created more chances but we’re still learning and we’ll take that into the next game.”
“At times, we definitely got the ball into the midfield and used our front three quite well at times. It still could have been better and we’ll look to improve on that in games to come.
“It was brilliant to have fans back in the ground because obviously we haven’t played in front of fans for a long time. It was really nice to hear their support. It’s a shame we couldn’t give the win but a good performance so hopefully they come to watch us in other games and we can give them a good result.”
A couple of members of the Under-23s squad - namely Jonathan Tomkinson and Tom Dickson-Peters - spent time training with the first-team in pre-season, and Gibbs has noticed development in their game as a result.
“Jon especially has come back a real leader, leading by example,” he said. “It’s good to have that in the team. The first-team training is more intense than ours and he’s coming back and demanding those standards from us so it’s good.
“I feel like I’ve definitely settled into Norwich now and my performance was better today than the previous game and I’m just sort of learning and still getting to know everyone. Hopefully, in games to come we can gel more as a team.”
