West Bromwich Albion were the only side in the top three of the Sky Bet Championship to win on the weekend, Norwich City loanee Jordan Hugill contributing to the three points.
Hugill came on in the 55th minute of Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Coventry City. The result put Valerian Ismael’s third-placed side six points behind AFC Bournemouth and seven shy of league leaders Fulham.
Elsewhere in the second tier, Middlesbrough are ninth and five points behind the play-off places following their 1-0 win at home to Swansea City on Saturday. Onel Hernandez came on in the 73rd minute for Chris Wilder’s side.
Overseas, Josip Drmic scored his 15th goal in 19 games in all competitions in 2021/22, putting HNK Rijeka 2-0 up in the quarter-finals of the Croatian Football Cup against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. Drmic was substituted at half-time and Rijeka went on to win 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
In the FA Cup, Akin Famewo played 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in Charlton Athletic’s 2-0 win away to Gateshead on Friday, progressing to the third round.
City loanees Josh Martin and Tyrese Omotoye went head-to-head as Milton Keynes Dons knocked Leyton Orient out of the Papa John’s Trophy in the second round on Tuesday night.
Omotoye played the first 62 minutes of the game, while Martin came on in the 57th minute, scoring in the penalty shootout that MK Dons won 5-4 after drawing 0-0 in 90 minutes.
There was also cup action for Reece McAlear, who played 77 minutes of Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s Scottish Challenge Cup quarter-final at home to Raith Rovers on Tuesday. The game ended 0-0, ICT losing 5-4 on penalties.
McAlear also made a cameo appearance in the 86th minute of their 1-0 win at home to Kilmarnock on Friday to go top of the Scottish Championship, one point ahead of Raith Rovers and two of Kilmarnock.
Barnet rose to 13th in the Vanarama National League with a 3-0 win at home to Maidenhead United on Saturday, Aston Oxborough keeping a clean sheet in goal for that game.
Finally, fellow goalkeeper Sam Blair was involved in Bury Town’s 2-0 loss at home to Basildon United on Saturday. Bury are now ninth in the Isthmian League North Division.
