Norwich City goalkeeper Archie Mair, on loan at Notts County, was the hero as the Magpies secured promotion to Sky Bet League Two via a penalty shootout over the weekend.
The 22-year-old was a late substitution in extra-time, replacing first choice Sam Slocombe in a pre-planned switch for the spot-kicks.
He would go on to save two of Chesterfield's five penalties as Notts won 4-3 in the shootout after a 2-2 draw in the 120 minutes.
Mair said afterwards that the late switch could have also happened in the semi-final but a forced change and subsequent late winner saw him kept in reserve.
"To be fair, we'd been speaking about it before and we'd done our homework all this week," Mair said.
"So, I was quite calm, I knew when it was going to extra-time that I needed to be ready so I was getting my head in it.
"Last week, it looked like we were heading to pens and it was kind of the plan up until we made our fourth sub. I had it in my head that I was going to be coming on for penalties so I was always ready for that situation and was just concentrating until full-time."
Ahead of the play-offs, much of the discussion was focused around how Notts County had finished second on 107 points, 23 clear of third-placed Chesterfield but with only one automatic promotion spot going to title winners Wrexham.
"The boys deserved it, they've worked so hard, the fans as well. I did the easy bit, just came on at the end and saved a couple of pens," Mair added.
"It's unbelievable. I've only been here since January on loan but I know how much it means, how big a club it is. They deserve to be in the Football League.
"I think we were confident the whole time that we could go up but it's the play-offs and anything could happen. All the talk was that we should go up but we just had to play our own game and be at it.
"If we're at it then no one should beat us. Obviously it came down to extra-time and penalties today but I think we deserve it in the end. Throughout the whole season the lads have been immense so I think it all worked itself out."
