Match Preview | Middlesbrough v Norwich City

Norwich City head to the Riverside Stadium on Friday evening to take on fourth-placed Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship (KO 8pm).

Norwich City head to the Riverside Stadium on Friday evening to take on fourth-placed Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship (KO 8pm).

Both sides are looking to bounce back from Easter Monday draws, Norwich were held at home by Rotherham while Boro had to come from two point for a share of the points at Bristol City.

City are still within touching distance of the play-off spots and a positive result here would go a long way to finishing in the top six.

The Opposition

After a rocky start to the season, the appointment of Michael Carrick at the helm has turned Boro's fortunes around in a huge way.

They have gone from 21st in the table when he was appointed to competing for the last remaining automatic promotion spot.

Recent results have seen Luton pip them into third while Sheffield United have now put eight points between them, while also holding a game in hand.

One to Watch

Chuba Akpom

England underage international Chuba Akpom has led the line for Carrick's team all season, making 34 appearances in the league.

He has also scored a league high 26 goals, eight more than second-highest Viktor Gyokeres.

Ryan Giles also tops the assist charts with 11, making them a dangerous combination. Akpom has also this week been shortlisted for the EFL's Championship Player of the Season.

The Manager

Michael Carrick

Since his appointment in late October, Michael Carrick has overseen a huge jump in Middlesbrough's form.

His coaching experience started as part of Jose Mourinho's team at Manchester United, and later staying on under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When the latter was relieved of his duties in November 2021, Carrick stepped in as caretaker manager until Ralf Rangnick's appointment.

His first month in charge saw him nominated for the Championship manager of the month award, one he later won for Boro's form in March.

Last Time Out

The reverse fixture at Carrow Road was both sides' final fixture before the World Cup break back in November.

Josh Sargent fired the Canaries in front in the seventh minute but they were unable to add to that tally.

Riley McGree equalised in spectacular fashion with just under half an hour remaining before substitute Matt Crooks clinched the three points for Boro in added time.
