Norwich City Under-23s travel to the Aggborough Stadium in Kidderminster on Monday to face Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-23s in the Premier League 2 Division Two.
City rose to sixth in the league, despite last Sunday’s 3-2 loss at Middlesbrough U23s, after Burnley U23s were beaten 4-1 at Aston Villa U23s.
With five wins, two draws, five defeats, 29 goals scored and 28 conceded, the Canaries find themselves one point behind Wolves, who are fourth with 18 points from 12 games.
Wolves have built their success this season on a strong defence - the second best in the league on goals conceded - but have only scored 13 goals, which is fewer than any other side in the division.
They came from behind to win 2-1 against Birmingham City U23s last Friday.
Jonathan Tomkinson expects a tough test against a disciplined Wolves side on Monday.
“They’re very good opposition,” he said. “They’re fairly similar to the teams we’ve played recently in terms of their formation, so we’re prepared for that.
“Hopefully we’ll have a better outcome than the last few games. They play a back three which changes to a back five and teams like that can be really hard to beat.
“It’s our job to try to break that down. We’re a very expansive team, so I think we can do that.
“There were a lot of lessons to learn in that game against Middlesbrough. We had quite a few decent moments going forward, but could have done a lot better with it.
“Defensively, we could have tightened up a bit more. We want to have possession with a purpose, not just for the sake of it.”
Tomkinson has played 10 out of 12 league games at centre-back so far this season.
“Personally, I had a minor bump in the road with a little injury but I feel like I’m having a decent year and I’m always looking to do better, so I’ll take every game in my stride and try to learn from each one,” he said.
