Norwich City were beaten 2-1 by Burnley on a difficult night at Turf Moor for the Canaries in the Sky Bet Championship.
City set out in a rejigged 5-3-2 formation, with Ruairi McConville making his full debut in defence, while Josh Sargent started on the bench.
Borja Sainz thought he was through on goal after Kenny McLean stole possession in the seventh minute, but the offside flag denied him the chance to open the scoring.
Marcus Edwards fired over from a Burnley corner in the eighth minute but the home side were ahead on 14 minutes when Hannibal Mejbri chested down a ball floated over the City defence and steered it past Angus Gunn.
A minute later and McLean's cross found Kellen Fisher at the far post but the right-back's header on target was comfortable for James Trafford.
On 23 minutes, Burnley doubled their lead with a deflected Jaidon Anthony shot from outside the box that left Gunn with no chance.
Burnley continued to pile on the pressure and could have had a third in the 34th minute when Maxime Estève steered over from a Zian Flemming knock down.
Sainz nearly pulled one back after Jacob Sørensen's precise through-ball had played him in on goal on 38 minutes, but his dinked effort over Trafford rolled wide.
Hannibal hit the post from the middle of the City box as Burnley looked to grab a third before half-time.
A heavy challenge from Josh Cullen on Sørensen saw him replaced by Marcelino Núñez just before the break.
Sargent came on for McConville at the interval and, on 49 minutes, the American was involved as he held the ball up well and supplied Anis Ben Slimane, who dragged his shot off-target.
Shane Duffy did well to block a shot from Hannibal on 60 minutes and the resulting corner led to nothing.
City were rewarded for an improved second-half performance and found themselves back in the game in the 76th minute when substitute Jack Stacey prodded home from McLean's flick-on from a corner.
The play became more open as both teams looked for the game's fourth goal and City forced a free-kick late in stoppage time but Nùñez overhit his delivery and it was too high for Duffy.
The final whistle confirmed City's defeat and saw Burnley take top spot in the table ahead of the weekend's fixtures.
The Canaries return to action on Good Friday when they host Portsmouth at Carrow Road (KO 3pm).
