Match Report | Charlton Athletic 0-1 Norwich City

An early goal from Pelle Mattsson was enough to take all three points back to Norfolk as Norwich City beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

An early goal from Pelle Mattsson was enough to take all three points back to Norfolk as Norwich City beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Mattsson put the Canaries in front inside five minutes and collected his first goal in yellow and green in doing so.

Philippe Clement made two changes from the Canaries' midweek defeat away to Southampton; Liam Gibbs and Mattsson rejoining the starting 11 in place of Jack Stacey and Sam Field.

City started the game on the front foot and found an opener through Mattsson inside five minutes, who picked the ball up on the edge of the box and bent a shot round the Charlton defence to find the top corner.

Paris Maghoma continued to apply pressure in the hosts' half, cutting inside to take a shot at Will Mannion, who could only punch the effort behind for a corner.

After Norfolk-born Sonny Carey's initial shot at goal was blocked, Norwich were able to catch Charlton on the break, Maghoma setting up Mathias Kvistgaarden whose shot rolled narrowly wide of the post.

After a well-controlled first-half, the second half opened with more intensity from the home side.

A free-kick from Luke Chambers forced Vladan Kovačević to punch away the strike in a dangerous attack from the Addicks.

A fantastic delivery into the box from Kvistgaarden forced Mannion into a diving save to prevent Gibbs from tapping in from close-range.

Charlton continued to test City's defence and came close to an equaliser with attempts from Kayne Ramsey and Jack Clarke.

Maghoma had yet another shot on target only to be denied by Mannion and the rebound was then desperately scrambled away by the Charlton defence.

Carey then tried to smash a shot into the bottom corner in the final minute of stoppage time but dragged his effort wide.

Despite throwing everything they had at the Canaries in the dying minutes, Charlton were unable to find an equaliser and City claimed the victory.

The Canaries are next in action after the international break when they host Portsmouth at Carrow Road on Friday, April 3.
