An early goal condemned Norwich City to a 1-0 defeat at home to Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship.

Johannes Hoff Thorup made two changes to the side that drew with Derby County on Saturday, with Oscar Schwartau and Borja Sainz coming into the starting 11 ahead of Emiliano Marcondes and Ante Crnac.

There would be a third switch, however, as Kenny McLean was ill during the warm-up. Jacob Wright would come in for his first start for the club after his arrival from Manchester City, with Jacob Sørensen joining the substitutes.

The game's first chance would lead to the first goal. A defensive mistake saw Milutin Osmajic open the scoring after being found by Mads Frokjær.

Ryan Ledson had a golden opportunity to double Preston's lead, but volleyed wide of Angus Gunn's goal.

A good period of City possession saw Sainz, Lewis Dobbin and Anis Ben Slimane all combine well. The eventual shot from Slimane was well held by Freddie Woodman.

In a quiet second half, the away side almost doubled their lead. Kaine Kesler-Hayden rolled a chance wide of the post.

There would be a debut for Matěj Jurásek, who replaced Slimane for the final 20 minutes of the game.

Shane Duffy rose highest from a corner for Norwich, but saw a header bounce off-target as the Canaries continued their search for an equaliser.

Sainz came within inches of a late leveller, seeing a curled effort take a deflection and flash wide of the post.

But there wouldn't be an equaliser from City, as Preston claimed all three points in NR1.

The Canaries are on the road this weekend, as they travel away to the MKM Stadium to face Hull City (KO 3pm).
