Norwich City were beaten by a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty at Carrow Road, as Manchester United triumphed 1-0 in the Premier League.
The game was goalless right until the 75th minute when Ronaldo was fouled and stepped up to fire the penalty home.
City had matched their opponents throughout and had various openings to take at least a point from the game, but they didn't quite show a ruthless streak in front of goal.
Head coach Dean Smith made five changes to the side which lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur last time out. He shifted to a back four, with Ben Gibson and Andrew Omobamidele both missing - Ozan Kabak partnered Hanley at centre-back.
Dimitris Giannoulis replaced the ineligible Brandon Williams at left-back and Lukas Rupp came into the midfield to replace Pierre Lees-Melou. Josh Sargent replaced Adam Idah up top and Przemyslaw Placheta also came into the side for his first Premier League start.
On the bench, there was a spot for Under-23s captain Jon Tomkinson and long-term injury absentee Sam Byram.
Meanwhile, interim United head coach Ralf Rangnick named an unchanged line-up for the visitors.
City began well and almost worked a shooting opportunity on seven minutes. The ball was worked to Kenny McLean down the left who slid the ball inside to Sargent, however the City forward was crowded out by a handful of defenders in red.
Moments later, Teemu Pukki capitalised on a poor backpass from Alex Telles and stormed down the right hand side but his low cross aimed at McLean was cut out by Scott McTominay.
On 14 minutes, United had their first shot on goal and it came courtesy of a free-kick on the edge of the area after Grant Hanley was penalised by the referee. Telles' left-footed drive took a deflection and forced Tim Krul to tip the ball over the crossbar.
City were stretched defensively going into the match, and matters were made worse on 20 minutes when Hanley was forced off after going down under a challenge by Cristiano Ronaldo - he was replaced by Sorensen.
On 27 minutes, City worked it well down the right and Rupp managed to find Pukki in the area, but his first touch let him down and United were able to clear - shortly after, Diogo Dalot shot low and straight at Krul as the game started to heat up.
The best chance of the first-half came on 37 minutes, when United outnumbered City on the counter attack. The ball was eventually worked to Ronaldo who worked some room but fired an effort which Krul was able to beat away from close range.
But City continued to looked menacing when they moved the ball with purpose. On 40 minutes, Rupp found some room in the area but hesitated taking a shot and that allowed United men to eventually block and clear. It was a recurring theme in the first-half - City getting into good areas but lacking the conviction to make them count.
On the stroke of half-time, Krul was called into action again when Harry Maguire met Jadon Sancho's delivery. The City stopper did well to react and tip the ball over.
City began the second-half well and immediately threatened David de Gea in the United goal. Placheta exchanged passes with Max Aarons and managed to evade a challenge from Maguire but his shot was straight at the visiting goalkeeper.
The noise levels in Carrow Road were cranked up a notch on 56 minutes when Pukki produced City's best chance of the game. Rupp fizzed a pass into his feet and he was able to turn before unleashing a left-footed drive which de Gea had to tip over at full stretch.
Moments later, a Billy Gilmour corner was flicked on at the near post which Sorensen climbed to meet, and luckily for the visitors the ball looped onto the crossbar and behind.
Both sides made attacking changes midway through the second-half, with Mason Greenwood and Todd Cantwell entering the fray.
After City's impressive start to the second 45, United wrestled back some control in the game and they were awarded a penalty on 74 minutes when Aarons was adjudged to have pulled Ronaldo over in the area.
United's number seven stepped up to fire the penalty past Krul and make it 1-0.
However, City went within inches of replying immediately when Kabak met a flighted ball into the area but De Gea saved at full stretch.
City continued to probe for an equaliser and a Gilmour shot took a deflection and looked destined to nestle in the far corner, however the ball somehow curled round the wrong side of the post.
Despite their efforts, Ronaldo should have made it 2-0 with just five minutes left when Marcus Rashford skipped past Sorensen and played a low cross into the area, but he could only stab the ball over from six yards.
Five minutes were signalled when the 90 was done, as Carrow Road got behind their team one last time and de Gea once again saved United when he superbly kept out substitute Pierre Lees-Melou's goalbound header.
But it wasn't to be for City, as Ronaldo's penalty proved decisive.
