Despite a much-improved second-half performance, Norwich City were beaten 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the Premier League on Thursday evening.
City found themselves two down inside the opening 15 minutes after goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Mason Mount.
However, the Canaries recovered to set up a tense finish when Teemu Pukki scored from the penalty spot with a quarter of the game remaining.
But Kai Havertz rifled the ball home with just a minute left on the clock to seal the points for the visitors.
Dean Smith switched to a back three and made four changes to his starting eleven from the defeat to Brentford on Saturday. Christoph Zimmermann and Ozan Kabak came into the defensive line, with Max Aarons returning at right-back for Sam Byram. Pierre Lees-Melou came into the midfield in place of the ineligible Billy Gilmour, with Ben Gibson and Milot Rashica also dropping out of the side.
Chelsea, themselves, lined up in their usual back three and took the lead inside three minutes when Mount's cross was flicked home at the near post by Chalobah.
The Blues almost had a second within minutes when City gave the ball away in their own third, but Havertz's strike was palmed away by Tim Krul.
Chelsea continued their superiority and took a 2-0 lead on 14 minutes when Mount finished into the top corner from close range.
City's first attempt of goal came on 18 minutes, when Mathias Normann fired a speculative effort over the bar.
Moments later, Zimmermann, making his first league start for the club in 13 months, marauded forward from the back but his strike took a deflection and was grasped by Edouard Mendy.
The game slowed after a frenetic start, but it was Chelsea who looked the more likely of adding to their lead with Mount volleying over and Cesar Azpilicueta nodding a corner narrowly wide.
With five minutes to go until the half-time, Chelsea went very close to adding a third. A corner from the right was headed away by Grant Hanley but Kovacic fired the ball back towards goal, but his effort could only clip the post.
Into the second-half and Smith made two changes to his side with Rashica and Rupp coming on for Zimmermann and Normann.
The changes injected fresh impetus into City right away, and they broke with pace on 48 minutes but the move, started by Rupp and featuring Rashica, ended with Pukki's shot deflecting into the arms of Mendy.
Rashica was full of energy after being introduced and he cut inside on 52 minutes but sent a strike over the bar - however, his positivity going forward gave the home crowd a lift.
City's persistence in the second-half paid off as they were awarded a penalty on 67 minutes, with Chalobah penalised for handball in the area. Up stepped Pukki to send Mendy the wrong way from the spot for 1-2.
City had their tails up and from a teasing Rashica free-kick moments later, Kenny McLean nodded across goal but was denied by Mendy.
As the second-half wore on, City continued to look the more likely to score next, and their press was having an impact with Lees-Melou winning the ball high up the pitch on 81 minutes but blazing an effort over the bar.
However, Chelsea came close to sealing the victory at the other end moments later. Mount drilled a low ball across the face of goal, but neither Timo Werner nor Kai Havertz could connect.
Smith introduced Jon Rowe late on in a bid to mix to salvage a point, but it was Chelsea's late sub Romelu Lukaku who connected with a low cross and saw his effort dribble wide of the post, as the visitors went close to securing the points.
And the points were indeed secured with a minute to play when Havertz planted the ball into the top corner for 3-1.
