Norwich City were eliminated from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, AFC Bournemouth winning 5-3 on penalties at Carrow Road after drawing 2-2 in 90 minutes.
Jordan Hugill scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute before Emiliano Marcondes equalised on the brink of half-time, but City looked like they'd won it when Adam Idah, off the bench as a substitute, made it 2-1 with seven minutes to go.
However, Bournemouth equalised again in the second minute of stoppage time courtesy of substitute Brooklyn Genesini, before Ryan Christie scored the winning penalty in the shootout after Todd Cantwell hit the crossbar.
Cantwell set up the first promising attack from the Canaries, as he laid a ball to Milot Rashica in the box and Sam Byram's cross was cleared from a dangerous position by a Cherries shirt in the box.
The 11th minute saw a cross into the box from Tony Springett in left-back position find the head of Gabriel Sara, but his effort couldn't find the target and went behind for a goal kick.
Jaidon Anthony for Bournemouth failed to capitalise on a mistake on the edge of the box from City, as his close-range header was fired over the bar.
It was the Brazilian who eventually broke through Bournemouth's solid defence at the 22 minute mark, as Sara's initial shot from the edge of the box was tipped away, into the feet of Hugill, who found the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0.
The visitors came close to an equaliser five minutes later, as Marcondes flicked a shot onto the bar from close-range.
A positive spell saw a well worked play from Cantwell and Rashica on the right side of the box, as a cross fell just short of Aaron Ramsey who leaped to get a head on the end of it.
Saydee took aim at goal four minutes from half time, but his shot was parried behind by Angus Gunn for a corner. The resulting set piece was cleared to safety.
A minute later, the Cherries found a breakthrough via Marcondes, after a deflected Saydee shot fell to him in open space in the six-yard box and he tapped home the equaliser.
Bournemouth continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the second half, as both Saydee and Marcondes took shots at goal, but couldn't get past the steady hands of Gunn.
Rashica tried to take matters into his own hands just before the hour mark, as he shot from distance on the right hand side of the box, but his effort went just wide of the target.
City substitute Idah's first touch was a threatening one, as a ball from Aarons played through to him let him one on one with Neto, but the flag was raised for offside before he could take a shot.
The attacking substitutes Teemu Pukki and Idah then linked up in the box, for the latter to tap home and put the Canaries back in front.
City finished the second half with high pressing and created plenty of chances to put the game to bed, but a Bournemouth cross found Genesini at the far post to equalise again.
Cantwell missed in the penalty shootout and Christie scored the deciding penalty to send the Cherries through to the next round.
City return to Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday, August 27 with a trip to the Stadium of Light to play Sunderland.
