City earn first Premier League win of 2021/22

Norwich City beat Brentford 2-1 in West London on Saturday afternoon, goals from Mathias Normann and Teemu Pukki giving the Canaries a first Premier League win of the 2021/22 season.

Daniel Farke made three changes to the side that started last weekend's 2-1 loss at home to Leeds United, Ben Gibson, Brandon Williams and Pierre Lees-Melou coming in for Grant Hanley, Ozan Kabak and Josh Sargent, City returning to a back four.

Brentford demonstrated their ability to cause danger from throw-ins with a long ball into the box from Mathias Jorgensen early on, the ball falling for Ivan Toney to hook wide with his knee.

Norwich took the lead in the sixth minute when Milot Rashica kept the ball well on the left wing before crossing into the box. It was cleared only as far as Normann, who wriggled past a number of red and white shirts before picking out the bottom right corner with his left foot from distance.

Rashica had an attempt of his own six minutes later, shifting the ball onto his right foot just inside the 18-yard box and shooting straight at Alvaro Fernandez.

Another long throw into the box from Brentford then reached Christian Norgaard who was able to poke the ball towards goal, but Tim Krul stuck out his right leg to save. The resulting corner was headed over by Ethan Pinnock.

With just under half an hour played, City doubled their lead as Normann sent Pukki through on goal. The Finnish forward was fouled by substitute Charlie Goode as he was about to pull the trigger, winning a penalty which he calmly dispatched by sending Fernandez the wrong way.

Norwich controlled the final 15 minutes of the first half to go into the break with a 2-0 lead.

The second half took no time to get going, City presented with a great chance to go three ahead when Williams darted down the left wing before laying the ball off for Pukki. His low shot was dragged just wide of the far post before Brentford thought they'd pulled one back at the other end.

Toney flicked the ball on for Bryan Mbeumo, who found the back of the net, but VAR confirmed that Max Aarons had stepped up just in time to play Mbeumo offside, so the score remained 2-0 to City.

As Brentford applied the pressure at the start of the second half, Toney raced past Andrew Omobamidele and put a good ball into the box, only for Gibson to clear the danger.

From the following corner, Krul made a remarkable save from close range, Norgaard getting lots of power on his left-footed shot.

But the City 'keeper was unable to prevent a looping cross from the right wing in the 60th minute from reaching Rico Henry, who touched it back across goal and over the line to pull one back for the home side.

In the 69th minute, Mbeumo's cross reached Sergio Canos, who shifted past Williams and shot straight at Krul.

With Brentford chasing an equaliser, Dimitris Giannoulis replaced Dowell in the 74th minute for City's first change of the game.

The City left-back was called into action straight away to put the ball behind for a corner following Ethan Pinnock's tantalising cross into the box. The corner came out to Canos, who scuffed the shot and Krul could gather comfortably.

With 13 minutes remaining, Sargent came on for Pukki and immediately carried the ball down the right wing to win a free-kick. Lees-Melou stepped up to take, the set-piece cleared as far as Giannoulis. He whipped an inviting ball back in for Sargent but Brentford just about managed to clear the danger.

Rashica had time and space to carry the ball forward late on and tested Fernandez with a low, powerful strike.

Despite the late pressure from Brentford, Norwich showed the solidity required to hold on for the first win of the season.
