Michael McGovern: It was nice to contribute towards some wins

Michael McGovern made ten consecutive appearances for Norwich City this season during Tim Krul's injury across November and December.

After signing a new contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2023, the City 'keeper told canaries.co.uk about his pride in contributing to six wins during that period.

“It was nice to come in and contribute towards some wins and get some game time when Tim was injured," he said. "Ultimately, the team is the most important thing.

“It’s nice from a personal point of view to get the contract all wrapped up. It’s good to have that little bit of security about your future so I’m really happy to sign it.

“With the pandemic, people have had to adapt. Us, as players, and the people in the backroom staff have adapted really well. Our job is to win football matches and try to be successful. I’m really pleased with how it’s gone."

Asked about his plans going forward, McGovern said he's primarily focused on contuining to train hard, but could consider coaching in the future.

“I’m trying to do my best every day in training," he said. "I know I can’t play forever and have to do something after football. Coaching may be a possibility down the line. I’ve done my B license recently and enjoyed finishing that.

“Football and life in general - you make plans and they don’t come to fruition so we’ll have to wait and see what happens."

The goalkeeping department at Lotus Training Centre now consists of the experienced Krul, McGovern and Orjan Nyland, as well as upcoming talents like Daniel Barden, Archie Mair and Aston Oxborough.

“It’s a really good mix and everybody wants to play but gets on well," McGovern added. "We’re pushing each other every day. It’s good to have the younger goalkeepers coming through and they have really good futures ahead of them.

“It’s nice to be able to pass on little snippets of information which will benefit and improve them. They’re all good boys and they want to get better. If they continue their development and stay clear of injuries, there’s no reason they can’t all have good careers.

“Orjan seems to have settled in really well in the dressing room. Hopefully, I’m back from the injury soon and we can get on the pitch together.

“We’ve got a really good medical department. It’s been a new feeling for me because throughout my career I’ve never really had an injury, so I’ve been fortunate, but I appreciate the good people looking after me.”
