All at Norwich City were saddened to learn of the passing of former player Mike Kenning on March 15, in Johannesburg aged 84.
A fleet-footed power-shooting winger who served the Canaries in the 1960s, Kenning was born in Erdington, Birmingham and began his career with Aston Villa, the team he had supported as a boy.
He later plied his trade with Shrewsbury Town and Charlton Athletic before joining Norwich City in December 1966 when then-City boss Lol Morgan parted with a £27,000 transfer fee to secure his services.
He made his City debut on Boxing Day 1966 as Morgan’s men went down 2-1 in a Second Division fixture away to Millwall. In a Canaries career that spanned just over 12 months, Kenning made 50 appearances and netted 11 goals.
The undoubted highlight of his time in Norfolk was playing in City’s sensational FA Cup fourth round victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in January 1967, as the second-tier Canaries defeated a United team that included the holy trinity of Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best in front of a crowd of 63,405.
Kenning returned to his Midlands roots when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1968. His league career also included a second spell with Charlton and a stint at Watford before he hung up his boots and emigrated to South Africa.
The thoughts of everyone at Norwich City are with Mike’s family and friends at this sad time.
