Norwich City are proud to support LGBTQ+ History Month and Football v Homophobia’s month of action, as part of our on-going work to challenge discrimination and celebrate diversity in football.
LGBTQ+ History Month is an annual month-long event that highlights lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
Football v Homophobia’s month of action sees the organisation ask clubs, fans, players, football authorities and supporters to help them by focusing their efforts to challenge discrimination based on sexual orientations, gender identity and expression, at all levels in football.
Football v Homophobia is an international movement which is very close to our hearts as it was originally launched by the Justin Campaign in 2010, to demonstrate that more than 10 years after the tragic suicide of former Norwich City player Justin Fashanu, in 1998, homophobia was, and still is, hugely prevalent in both grassroots and professional football.
From today, February 1, Norwich City will be adding rainbow colours – a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride – to avatars on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.
We will also be dedicating our matchday programme on February 12, for our home game against Manchester City, to both Football v Homophobia and LGBTQ+ history month. The programme will include articles on Justin Fashanu – still the only top-level footballer in European football to openly come out as gay – and fan related articles that celebrate inclusivity at Norwich City.
So keep an eye out on our website, social media channels and video platforms as we recognise LGBTQ+ History and continue to tackle homophobia and discrimination in football throughout February.
