Norwich City Women qualify for the first round of the Women's FA Cup

Norwich City Women are through to first round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, following a 2-0 victory over Harlow Town.

The preliminary qualifying round win at Harlow was a chance for the Canaries to redeem themselves; as they had thrown away a three-goal half-time lead at Harlow the previous weekend to lose their league fixture there.

Both teams were nervy on the ball to start, but City soon got on the ball and began to up the tempo with efforts going wide by new City signings Freya Fuller, and impressive runs forward by Rachel Lawrence.

City opened the scoring on the half hour mark when Ellie Bishop controlled a cleared corner to lob the Harlow keeper from 40 yards out to score her first professional goal.

Harlow did respond, putting pressure on the Canaries for a period of time, but the visitors held the wave and were shortly after rewarded with a second goal. A lofted ball reached Lawrence who sent a direct ball to Rosie George, which after a deflection found its way to Fuller who netted on her first start for the club.

City changed their front line at half-time as George came off to be replaced with Freya Symonds, returning from an injury picked up in the win earlier in the season at home to Actionians.

Harlow came come out with intensity in the second half, aiming to repeat their previous week’s result. They came close early on with a deflected shot hitting the bar, and two shots going just wide of the mark.

City seemed nervy, but as the game went on, Harlow were limited to shots from 25 yards, all of which were comfortable for keeper Bryony Williams.

The Canaries were then on the front foot, looking more dangerous as the second half went on, with Lawrence and Symonds both having chances midway through the half from one-on-one opportunities.

Harlow threw everything at City as the game went into the closing stages, but only managed to create half chances from both open play and set pieces as City’s desire to hold on was evident.

Late City changes helped to freshen up the tiring legs as Jodie Drake and Fuller, were replaced by Millie Daviss and Kate Appleton.

Norwich City Women are back in action on Sunday at The Nest against Cambridge United in the next round of fixtures in the FA Women’s National League Division One South East.

Norwich City: Bryony Williams, Jess Harper, Ellie Bishop, Chardonnay Johnson, Anna Larkins, Leilah Goodings, Jodie Drake (Millie Daviss 70), Megan Todd, Rachel Lawrence, Freya Fuller (Kate Appleton 85), Rosie George (Freya Symmonds 45)
