Bio: Rob Newman had made almost 400 appearances for Bristol City when he signed for Norwich in July 1991, for a fee of £600,000.

His first season at the club was a successful one as Rob, who up until that point had played in defence for Bristol, started in central midfield for the Canaries and was almost an ever-present in the side as he played 53 games in all competitions and scored seven times.

His debut season in the Premier League saw him feature in 16 matches, netting twice, including the only goal in a home victory over Sheffield Wednesday, but in the second half of the campaign he only featured in the final two matches at home to Liverpool and away at Middlesbrough. The following season, having shifted into defence, he became a more regular starter, and played 32 games and netted goals against Blackburn Rovers and Swindon Town.

Newman fell out of starting contention at the start of the 1997/98 season and ended up joining Motherwell on loan before seeing out the campaign at John Deehan’s Wigan. Rob then joined Southend where he played 72 games, scoring 11 times, and had spell as assistant manager.

Memorable moment

By mid-September in the 1992/93 Premier League season, Norwich City were flying high at the top of the table having won six of their eight matches. Rob Newman made that seven from nine as he netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, at Carrow Road, heading home a cross from the right into the bottom corner of the net.
