Norwich City's 10 men suffered a 1-0 Boxing Day defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
Playing almost an hour with a man disadvantage following the dismissal of Borja Sainz, City were limited to scraps in possession as West Brom maintained control.
In the 50th minute, Brandon Thomas-Asante scored the game's only goal.
With Dimitris Giannoulis missing out due to injury, David Wagner opted for Sam McCallum on the left side of defence while Adam Idah took the place of Onel Hernández.
The Canaries had the first chance to make either 'keeper work when a Marcelino Núñez free-kick inside two minutes was collected by Alex Palmer.
The hosts controlled the early possession without really threatening the goal until John Swift volleted on to the post in the 16th minute.
Swift had another opportunity in the 25th minute in a similar position but his swipe at the ball found only air.
And it was almost third time lucky for Swift but Angus Gunn punched away his strike from distance after half an hour.
That was followed immediately by Palmer making a similar save at the other end from Sainz, before the Spanish winger tried to find the corner acrobatically a moment later but was off-target.
Unfortunately for City, Sainz's next involvement would be to receive his second yellow card.
At the break, Grant Hanley and Danny Batth were both introduced with City moving to a 5-3-1. The captain making his first appearance since picking up a serious injury at Ewood Park in April.
However, Albion made their numerical advantage tell just five minutes after the restart with Thomas-Asante poking home from close range.
Grady Diangana had almost doubled the lead 10 minutes later but his side-footed shot was outside of Gunn's post.
Set-pieces provided an outlet for the Canaries and it was from Gabriel Sara's second delivery after an initial corner that Hwang Ui-Jo almost equalised.
However, Palmer got down well to turn his close-range header around the post.
Try as City might, the 10 men couldn't wrestle control away from the hosts but did limit their scoring opportunities.
