Sam McCallum and Borja Sainz were the scorers as Norwich City registered a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in their final home game of 2023.

Norwich came into the contest with just one defeat in seven, in confident mood, but were forced to wait until after half-time to make the breakthrough.

McCallum headed home inside the first two minutes of the second half before Sainz got the insurance goal with 20 minutes remaining.

David Wagner opted to make a change in attack with Onel Hernández starting in place of Adam Idah while Ben Gibson and Hwang Ui-Jo returned to the matchday squad.

The Canaries started with intensity, but it took almost eight minutes for the first real attempt on goal when Gabriel Sara fired wide from a tight angle.

Chances were few and far between as the visitors opted to sit back and invite Norwich on to them. Jonathan Rowe had a left-footed effort blocked and Sara fired a free-kick in a good position into the Huddersfield wall.

The best chance of the first half saw Chris Maxwell produce a great save to deny Ashley Barnes.

Marcelino Núñez had Maxwell scrambling across his goal just moments later but his 30-yard strike was off-target.

After picking up a knock late in the first half, Dimitris Giannoulis was replaced by McCallum at the break.

And it took the substitution less than two minutes to have an impact, heading home his first Norwich City goal for the opener from a Núñez cross.

That goal sparked more life into the City attack and they pinned the Terriers back into their own half.

Sara tested Maxwell from distance but the save was comfortable.

McCallum was key again to creating a chance for Barnes which Maxwell turned around the post.

When the second goal arrived, it was from a counter-attack that saw Idah and Barnes involved before Sainz rifled his shot into the bottom corner.

He almost had another soon after but Maxwell was in the way once more.

Back from injury, Hwang almost found the top corner with a venomous shot but it went just wide.

The open nature of the game saw for an entertaining finish with Huddersfield looking for a lifeline and Norwich keen to add more to their tally, but it would finish 2-0.

The Canaries are in action again on Boxing Day when they travel to The Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion.
