Norwich City ended 2023 in defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Millwall at The Den.
Tom Bradshaw's first-half strike would prove to be the difference between the sides.
There was some change to the lineup as David Wagner introduced Danny Batth, Ben Gibson, Onel Hernández, Christian Fassnacht and Hwang Ui-Jo to his starting 11.
Josh Sargent also made his long-awaited return from injury, named among the substitutes.
And the Canaries started well with Ashley Barnes and Hwang having attempts on goal in the first 10 minutes.
Barnes' effort was collected by Matija Sarkic before Hwang's venomous free-kick flew just wide of the target.
But it was the hosts who would take the lead when a counter-attack saw Bradshaw slide in to divert the ball home from close range.
Goalscoring opportunities were few and far in the first half with the home side happy to settle on their lead.
However, they could have doubled it late in the half when a cross made its way to Zian Flemming at the back post, but he was denied by an excellent Angus Gunn save.
And the Scotland number one was called upon early in the second half too, getting a strong hand to a powerful strike from Aidomo Emakhu.
Tempers flared briefly before Norwich made a triple substitution to inject some energy into the team.
Sam McCallum tested Sarkic with a volley but it was tipped over for a corner-kick.
The home side made it difficult for Norwich in the final third with chances continuing to be limited.
Gunn made another excellent save when he denied Ryan Longman before George Saville was sent off for a lunge on Jonathan Rowe with two minutes remaining.
The six minutes of added time saw Norwich push for a late equaliser but it would come to nothing.
